Sodium is the chemical element with atomic number 11 and chemical symbol Na. Sodium is a highly reactive metal and is the 6th most abundant element in the Earth's crust. When freshly cut, sodium is silvery white, but the cut surface rapidly darkens and tarnishes. Sodium does not exist as a free metal in nature - rather it exists in compounds. Its most familiar compound is NaCl, sodium chloride (table salt).
