Organs and Organ SystemsOrgans and Organ Systems

An organ is a part of your body that performs a specific function. It consists of a variety of tissues organized together, usually into a recognizable contained shape. For example, the heart consists of a few tissue types, and they all cooperate to pump blood. Organ systems, on the other hand, consist of one or more organs cooperating to perform a given function. For example, the cardiovascular system consists of the heart as well as the blood and blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries, etc.) and they all cooperate to transport blood carrying nutrients, oxygen, hormones and other signaling molecules, and waste products all over the body.
