Michelangelo (1475 – 1564) was a painter and sculptor from the Italian High Renaissance. He is best known for his paintings of biblical scenes in the Sistine Chapel (including the creation of Adam and the Last Judgment), and his statues of David and the Pietà. Michelangelo was also an engineer and an architect, taking over the planning and design of St. Peter's Basilica.
